Blyde River Canyon is definitely on my travel dreams list! See below for where to stay and what to do while you visit this gorgeous piece of heaven. Possibly the largest ‘green’ canyon in the world with its lush vegetation, Blyde River Canyon is second largest in Africa after the Fish River Canyon. Named in 1844 by Dutch explorer Hendrik Potgieter, the ‘happy river’ Canyon forms part of the Drakensburg escarpment and is a popular attraction along the cultural Panorama Route in Mpumalanga.
Nearby attractions include God’s Window, the Pinnacle, Pilgrim’s Rest and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
Activities in the area:
- Horse riding
- White water rafting
- Hot-air ballooning
- Tours and boat trips on the Blyde Dam
